MAPC9, Metal Wasteland Zone Act 1, abbreviated as MWZ1, is the first act of Metal Wasteland Zone, the fourth zone in Blue Heaven. The first half of the level takes place on the banks of a river of poisonous slime. In the second half, the player enters the factory that produces the slime. A prototypical version of this level called Poisoned Paradise Zone appeared in the Official Level Design Contest of December 2003, which it won with a score of 7.43.

Walkthrough

First section

You start the level at the end of a large slime river. Walk forward along the riverbank on the right side. After a left turn, you will reach a cliff with a waterfall. Jump over to the left riverbank, where a row of yellow springs takes you up to a higher ledge. Use the diagonal yellow springs on that ledge to reach a pillar on the other side of the river, from which you can reach the top of the waterfall. If you fall into the river, there's no immediate way to get back up. Instead, you must backtrack to the end of the river, where there are some springs to get you back up.

Once you've reached the top of the waterfall, continue forward along the riverbanks until you reach a tall cliff with a tunnel that the river passes through. You can continue along either riverbank. On the left riverbank, you can use two rows of diagonal yellow springs or a moving platform to get to a higher cliff. On the right riverbank, you can use a row of diagonal yellow springs to reach a ledge winding around the surrounding walls. Walk across the ledge to reach a tunnel that goes through the cliff that the river passes through. Jump across a pillar in the slime, which is guarded by a red Crawla, to reach a cliff on the other side, where the paths rejoin.

Continue along the left riverbank and use a row of diagonal yellow springs to reach a higher level with the first Star Post and the entrance to a factory. On the left side of the factory, you will find a row of diagonal yellow springs that will propel you up to a high ledge. Jump up the steps in front of you and turn left to find a red button, which will open the door to the factory. Jump down and enter the factory. After following a U-turn, you will reach a corridor filled with lasers, some of which move up and down. Jump over the first one and wait for the second one to move up so you can walk underneath it. After passing underneath the next laser, you will reach a set of two lasers, with the lower one being stationary and the second one moving up and down. When the moving laser is at the top, jump through the gap between the two lasers. Now turn right and jump over a pool of slime.

Path split

Here the path splits: You can either step on the conveyor belt in front of you or turn right.

Forward path

There are two crushers on the conveyor belt that you must pass underneath. Step on the conveyor belt and backpedal to stay in place until the first crusher starts receding. Then pass under it and move slowly as you wait for the second crusher to come down. Once it starts receding, quickly pass under it. The conveyor belt leads into a room with several crates and a Turret on a high pillar to the right. Hide behind the crates until the Turret stops firing and then quickly leave the room through one of the doors on either side of it. You will reach a room with a pool of slime in the center, in which several pistons move up and down. Jump on top of one of the lower pistons and let it carry you up. When it reaches the top, jump to the higher piston in the middle. Once the higher piston has reached the top, you can jump to the fenced-off walkway at the top of the room. Turn right and walk through the small air vent to reach a high fenced-off ledge with a Liquid Shield on top of a room with a large pool of slime in the middle. Jump down to the floor. Here the paths rejoin.

Right path

Turn right and jump over another pool of slime. You will enter a room with a large pool of slime in the middle and several fenced-off ledges surrounding it. Jump over the fences to the ledge on the left side. Here the paths rejoin.

Final section

Walk across the fenced-off ledge that leads around the slime. At the end, a bridge leads across the slime to an area closed off by glass walls. The bridge will crumble when stood upon, so run across it quickly. On the other side, turn left and activate the second Star Post. Pass through the small air vent in the right wall to reach a beam at the top of an outdoor area. Jump down into the valley below. Here you can go either left or right. If you go left, you will pass underneath a bridge and reach a row of diagonal yellow springs that will propel you up a cliff. If you go right, you must jump across three crumbling platforms over a lake of uncontaminated water.

In both cases, you will end up at a wooden bridge. Walk over it to reach a large lake, with the factory that you passed through earlier atop a cliff to the left. Walk across either of the walkways leading over the water. If you take the right one, you must use a row of diagonal yellow springs to be propelled to another platform across the water. At the end, two diagonal yellow springs lead to the top of a higher pillar, where two more springs propel you on top of the cliff with the factory building. Turn left to see the entrance to a cave in the large rock in the water. Jump into the cave and walk through it to reach the Level End Sign.

Points of interest

Extra lives

  • In the starting area, a large beam passes over the river. To reach it as Sonic, jump into the slime and use one of the springs to propel yourself out of the water and up to the beam. On the right side, you will find an extra life and an Eggman Monitor.
  • At the waterfall near the start of the level, look behind the pillar on the right riverbank to find an extra life.
  • In the outdoor section after the factory, turn right and jump into the lake. In the right corner is an extra life.
  • In the final area with the large lake, jump into the water to the right of the walkway leading forward to find an extra life.

Shields

  • After reaching the top of the waterfall near the start of the level, you should see a cracked section of the wall beneath the higher ledge to your right. Spindash through it to enter a cave with an Attraction Shield.
  • Take the forward path in the factory. A Liquid Shield is on the balcony on which you enter the final room of the factory where the path split rejoins.
  • In the final room of the factory where the path split rejoins, a Whirlwind Shield sits on one of the crates. There are two ways to reach it as Sonic: If you took the forward path, you can jump down to it from the balcony that you enter the room on. If you took the right path, you can jump on top of the fence surrounding the slime pool and from there to the crates.
  • In the area with the wooden bridge before the final lake, there is a diagonal yellow spring on the floor. Use it to reach the top of the tall pillar in the center of the area, where you will find an Inferno Shield.

Invincibility

  • From the starting area, walk forward along the left riverbank until it is blocked by a tall cliff. A small section of the wall is cracked and can be spindashed through, revealing an invincibility monitor in Easy and Normal difficulty and a Super Ring Monitor in Hard difficulty and above.
  • In the area where the path splits in the factory, there is an invincibility monitor on a pipe to the left of the conveyor belt. To reach it as Sonic, you must jump up to it across the two pipes in the pool of slime.
  • Take the forward path in the factory. In the room with the pistons that move up and down in the slime, there is an invincibility monitor in the far right corner from the entrance.

Emblem locations

  • Sonic: Take the forward path in the factory. In the room with the pistons that move up and down in the slime, jump into the slime to find the emblem on the left side. To reach it safely, you can use the nearby invincibility monitor.
  • Tails: From the starting area, walk forward along the left riverbank until it is blocked by a tall cliff. Fly up to the top of that cliff, where you will find the emblem hidden between a group of bushes.
  • Knuckles: At the first Star Post before the factory entrance, jump over to the right riverbank. There you will find a diagonal red spring that leads up to a high beam passing over the previous area. On the right side of the beam is an alcove with the emblem.
